In 1847, it took 10 hours for a four-horse coach to carry the mail between Fayetteville and Raleigh. Today, it takes a little more than an hour to drive between the two cities.

The county's first public water system was built in 1824 in Fayetteville. Now the Fayetteville Public Works Commission uses 1,210 miles of water mains and can treat up to 50 million gallons of water a day.
