1916 Cape Fear Fair
Among the attractions that drove the "gloom bug to the tall timbers" at the 54th annual Cape Fear Fair held Oct. 24-27, 1916, were "aeroplane" flights and the high-dive act of Capt. Jack Payne.
Payne did a double somersault from a 105-foot ladder and landed in a 52-inch-deep tank of water.
Aviators treated crowds to the "latest arial stunts - spirals, dips and loops," according to a newspaper story.
1st Falcon Camp meeting
Attendees at the first Falcon Camp Meeting, July 19 through July 29, 1900, gather outside the Canvass Tabernacle. The tent's capacity was about 2,000 people.
Worship at the camp meeting started with sunrise prayers and ended with nightly evangelistic services.
Preachers at the tent meeting were said to be "roaring like lions," and "men fell under the power of God."
Bluff Mill (circa 1910)
The looms at the Bluff Mill in Hope Mills drew their power from overhead belts to weave cotton into sheeting, an operation shown in this photo.
The photo also reveals electric lights, an advancement that allowed mills to operate at night.
Night operations under gas lamps were too dangerous because of the cotton dust.
