Orange Street School chalkboard
photo
The floor and chalkboards are some of the only original items at the restored Orange Street School.

Math and English lessons are written on the chalkboard at the Orange Street School, the oldest public school building in Cumberland County.

The city built the school in 1915 to educate its black students. In 1927, high school classes were added on the second floor and evolved into what is now E.E. Smith High School.

Orange Street runs north from Moore Street, west of Ramsey Street.

The last classes were held at the Orange Street School in 1952. It served as an office and warehouse until 1983. It has been restored by the Orange Street School Historical Association. The chalkboards are among the few original items found in the school during restoration.
